Bad Girls of the Bible at Jive

Date: Saturday, March 26th 2005
Venue: Jive
Time: 9pm door opens, 9.30-10pm gig start
Price: $7
Bands: Bad Girls of The Bible w/ Mirrorline + Pharaohs

Adelaide's own Bad Girls of The Bible had a launch for their 7" double A-side single release for 88 Keys / Simple Mistakes ($10 for the 2-track CD and "Czech-made" 7" red vinyl record) at Jive with fellow supports, Mirrorline and Pharaohs. I turned up just in time for the Pharaohs but people said Mirrorline (formerly known as J-DED, who I've seen a few times before) were impressive.

Anyway, the Pharaohs (who I've seen before as supports for The Shins and were previously reviewed) were extremely tight and they had catchy bass sounds. They were a "loud" band for a 3-piece but great none-the-less and the crowd seem to love them.

But like the support bands said, "The night is all about Bad Girls..." and the crowd agreed.

The crowd was buzzing for the local headliners. Dan Pash's vocals were great and the band were definitely tight. They played both 88 Keys and Simple Mistakes, some other crowd favourites and finished off with a Neil Young cover of Hey Hey, My My (which I've recently been listening to covered by Oasis; actually most Adelaide bands I've caught always cover Neil Young...).

Hightlights: Dan jumping into the crowd a couple of times during their instrumental track. Dan jumping on top of the head speakers during 88 Keys and falling back onto the stage. Oh, and Dan jumping onto the drum kit / drummer at the end of their set. Choreographed (or channeling Jarvis Cocker)? Maybe, but there was a lot of sway-jumping for a pretty short set.

Melodic. "Spontaneous". Impressive. Expect big things from Bad Girls of the Bible.

New.Track.Mixes.

So, Easter weekend getaway didn't work out as planned.

Anyway, updated the five track mixes (side bar) with five new tracks:

The Grates - Message (2.3MB), the first track of their EP, The Ouch. The Touch.. Previously plugged. Yeah Yeah Yeahs meets Chicks on Speed? Maybe, but this Brisbane band is all buzz. Via NME.

Daft Punk - Robot Rock (3.4MB), from the recently released, Human After All (and the album was also recommended). Someone needs to teach me how to do the "robot rock" dance. Unbelievebly techno-catchy.

Copeland - No One Really Wins (2.4MB), from the new album, In Motion. Extremely good emo pop/rock, even for the emo-haters. Damn straight, best track on the album.

Caesars - Jerk It Out (2.3MB), from 2003's 39 Minutes of Bliss (In an Otherwise Meaningless World). So, I hate the iPod Shuffle ads. But the song they play over it is catchy. And here it is. At least its not U2.

Lou Barlow - Home (3.2MB), from his new album, Emoh. Formerly of Dinosaur Jr., this is Lou's official solo album under his real name (previously as Sentridoh) and the indie rock legend doesn't disappoint. He's being interviewed by Richard Kingsmill on Triple J's 2005, which you can listen to live online here from 6pm this Sunday. Via InSound.

Fall Out Boy at Escape Club.

Date: Friday, February 25th 2005
Venue: Escape Club in Swansea, Wales.
Time: 10pm door opens, 10:30pm gig start.
Price: 4 pounds.
Bands: Fall Out Boy w/ Spitalfield + My Awesome Compilation.

After a 45-minute train ride delay, microwaved cheese & tomato pizza, a walk in deserted high street, i finally was in the the second row of the mosh pit, waiting for the first opening act to play. Most shots are central because i couldn't move my arms to the sides as i was squished to the maximum. The venue is pretty small.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

The Leicester-based band, My Awesome Compilation took the stage at first, belting out tunes that though not a lot of people knew the words too, it got them to jump/dance along. A good performance, got the crowd hyped up because they were all very dancy.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Spitalfield took over the stage next. With a growing fanbase in the UK, many were singing along with them. Brought about an okay perfomance, got their fans happy, that's for sure.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Chicago's Fall Out Boy came last and just as they played the first note, the mosh pit went crazy. Bassist, Pete, couldn't be there due to some health problems so Spitalfield's bassist took over for him, he did well on the job. Couldn't get any pics of the other band members, either the outcome was too dark or blurry because everyone was pushing at the time. They played almost every song in 'Take This To Your Grave' and an electric-guitar version of 'Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner' from their acoustic EP 'My Heart Will Always Be The B-Side To My Tongue'. Pat's voice, at times, could rarely be heard because everyone was singing/shouting/screaming along to most of the songs. It was nice how Pat was being very interactive with the crowd, everyone seemed to be enjoying the set.

Free samplers of Spitalfield's new album were given out during the gig. That's also a CD that people should check out. The gig ended at around midnight, the bands were hanging out and meeting fans in the club after that. There was also an aftershow party upstairs that i didn't have time to check out but overall, i had a great time. I think everyone left the venue satisfied that their 4 pounds weren't wasted away.

HAPPY EASTER!

HAPPY EASTER!

I'm going away for Easter so there won't be any updates from me until Tuesday. The five track mixes and music recommendations will be posted then plus, a possible gig review.

Hopefully, Envy will fill you in with 4 gig reviews (Fall Out Boy, Bright Eyes, Eighteen Visions and The Ga*Ga*s), new track mixes and her music recommendations when I'm gone.

Eat some chocolate eggs for me!

Triple J: Feature Album of The Week

Time Machine - Slow Your Roll

Washington D.C. hip-hop outfit Time Machine are DJ Mekalek, Jaysonic and Comel and Slow Your Roll is this week's feature album on Triple J. The album features cameos from Special K (of Awesome Two), Edo G. and Edan and is packed full of "classic Hip-Hop" sounds.

I'm not a fan of hip-hop so make of it what you like, but starting this Friday morning until the Friday after, you get to hear tracks from Slow Your Roll on Triple J. [Ed's note: I got a heads up on the feature album, it doesn't actually start / officially announced until this Friday. Here's hoping I'm wrong and I don't have to cut down on radio for a week (sic).]

The album is out now.
Official Website

New Feature:
Featured.Gig.Venue.

There will be a new feature every month (or fortnight) on Featured.Gig.Venue. or (F.G.V.), which will highlight a particular venue or pub and list its great up-coming gigs for that period. Still under development but sort of an idea I wanted to bring about. Expect venue photos, details and possibly an interview for that feature.

Featured.Music.Video.

Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Goin Down

New F.M.V. is Sugar, We're Goin' Down, the first single of the up-coming sophomore album, From Under The Cork Tree, by Chicago pop punk outfit, Fall Out Boy. The video features new live footage and also, scenes from their previous DVD/EP release, My Heart Will Always Be The B-Side to my Tongue.

The video is available for streaming (hi-fi or lo-fi; RealPlayer or Windows Media Player) here (via Fall Out Boy's Official Website). Unfortuntely, you have to sign up for their street team, but its worth it. Sugar, We're Goin Down is currently on high radio rotation in the US and the album will be released on May 3rd there. No plans to release the album here, as of yet, but the band are distributed by Shock Records in Australia.

Music Recommendations Week 21/03/05

Sure, this week is meant to be all about motherfreaking rock (with the new Queens of the Stone Age and Beck releases) but we all need a balance. A bit more than usual thanks to amazing new releases, here's something for the "acoustica-minded".

Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
How can anyone not love Sufjan Stevens? Perfect couldn't even begin to describe the brilliance that is Seven Swans. Go buy the album, go see him live, go download this mp3, JUST GO!
Official Website
Download track #6: Sister (2.8MB) via InSound

Brendan Benson - Alternative To Love
Everyone's raving about Brendan Benson, so I decided to give his album a spin. A few spins later, I am kicking myself for not getting into his music earlier (only when the hype started). Sing-a-long to his infectious songs and go download one of the tracks from his new album.
Official Website
Download track #5: The Pledge (2.7MB) via InSound

Devin Davis - Lonely People of the World, Unite!
Firstly, I would like to thank *6eyes for the tip. Without him even describing him as Ted Leo-esque, I probably wouldn't have noticed (I'm a huge fan of Ted Leo). Chicago's Devin Davis is catchy pop-rock that makes you feel good, but also sad for the loneliness he sings about in this great debut.
Official Website
Download track #3: Turtle And The Flightless Bird (4.3MB) via his official website.

Featured "past" music recommendations:

Your Black Star - Split EP with Drum:Kan
I had the honour of catching this band during their Australian tour last year with Japanese pop-punk outfit, Drum:Kan and I fell in love with their music. I've never heard of them before and was just blown away by their beautiful melodies, amazing lyrics and lead singer, Jeremy Johnson's, voice. This brilliant three-piece band (also includes Andrew Osborn and ex-Elliott, Kevin Ratterman) from Louisville, Kentucky are so good and definitely underrated so go download my favourite track and check. them. out.

Official Website (Drum:Kan)
Download track #1: Lousy Smarch Weather (3.5MB) via PureVolume

Sufjan Stevens - A Sun Came
Yes, there is two Sufjan Stevens recommendations. Why? Because as much as I love his current release, Seven Swans, something about A Sun Came I adore a lot more. One of my favourite albums right now, its just pure, beautiful, perfect acoustica and no one should miss out on that.

Triple J: Feature Album of The Week

Beck - Guero

Beck is hands down one of the best pop / rock musicians around. Guero is his 8th studio album and unlike the mellow 2002's Sea Change (Beck getting over a relationship...), this album (Beck moved on, marriage and kid...) is packed full of those pop rock (and dance?) goodness only he knows how to make with pure perfection.

Don't forget: this Saturday from 5-6pm (Aus EST), they'll be playing a Beck MIX TAPE Special on Triple J (you can listen live online here). The special will be an hour of music from Beck so expect a sort of "greatest hits" collection.

The album will be released on March 21st.

Art of Fighting at Jive

Date: Thursday, March 17th 2005
Venue: Jive
Time: 8pm door opens, 9pm gig start
Price: $18
Bands: Art of Fighting w/ Paper Tiger + No Through Road

A spontaneous decision to go out on "St Patrick's Day" and realise that one of Melbourne's most underrated bands, Art of Fighting, had a gig (I know I do the gig guide, but sometimes vague-ness overrules the best of us) at Jive, I just couldn't miss it.

Art of Fighting make music that is just perfectly beautiful and mesmerising, I don't think anyone could resist it. Jive is a small gig venue (but with the worst lighting ever), which makes the set just personal and chilled but with a packed (and extremely tall) crowd that night, it made capturing good shots of the band difficult, so apologise for the poor quality. Unfortunately, I missed the first two bands, both local Adelaide outfits I've seen before, but people say they weren't that bad of supports that night.

The band played mostly older material from Wires and tracks from their new album, Second Storey. The singer / guitarist, Ollie Browne, has one of the best male vocals around and the whole band were just so tight and played such a great set. Everyone was so into it, singing-a-long softly and swaying to the gorgeous sounds. I loved how Ollie would close his eyes when he sings and the crowd would do the same. Just captivating and brilliant.

Beautiful. Personal. Amazing. Art of Fighting brought that on the night.

New.Track.Mixes.

Updated the five track mixes (side bar) with five new tracks:

Devin Davis - Iron Woman (2.7MB), from Lonely People of the World, Unite!. Catchy rock / pop, I really like. Thanks to *6eyes for the tip. Via his official website.

Of Montreal - Know Your Onion (2.3MB), a cover of the hit single originally performed by indie rock band, The Shins and was on the free bonus covers EP that came with 2004's Satanic Panic In The Attic. Of Montreal make happy pop music that makes me want to dance around and give people flower petals or something. Great cover of one of my favourite songs. Via their official website.

Death From Above 1979 - Romantic Rights (4.5MB), from their amazing album, You're A Woman, I'm A Machine, released in 2004. After their recent stint on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, its time to refresh ourselves the greatness that is DFA79. This is their hit single they performed on the show and my favourite track on the album. Via Vice Recordings.

Ted Leo + Pharmacists - Bleeding Powers (2.1MB), from one of my favourites of 2004, Shake The Sheets. The band will be coming to Australia for a tour with Blueline Medic this April/May. Via their official website.

Explosions In The Sky - Greet Death (6.5MB), from 2001's Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever. One of my favourite bands and so underrated, this is the first track off the album and instrumental rock at its best. Via InSound.

Notice.

I haven't been updating this site as frequently as i should so i'm really sorry about that. Things have been hectic around here. This week has been filled with gigs (see updated Cardiff Good Gigs on the right side) and tonight i would be going to The Ga*Ga*s. I will write the gig reviews of all the gigs i went to (Fall Out Boy, Bright Eyes, Eighteen Visions, The Ga*Ga*s) as soon as i am settled down. I am going back to Brunei this Friday so expect some reviews, music recommendations & track updates. I would not be going to any gigs between 18th March and 11th April as i would be in Brunei but the Cardiff good gigs list would still be updated though.

Music Recommendations Week 14/03/05

Sorry for the late recommendations, the weather is literally killing me. Anyway, enjoy my "dance dance dance" edition (plus something instrumental).

Moby - Hotel
Moby's new album, Hotel, probably isn't as catchy as Play or even, 18, but its definitely not to be ignored. More vocals from the vegan techno-star and you could hear a bit of his "punk roots" in some songs. Lift Me Up is already over-playing in most radio stations, so I give you one of my favourite tracks, Beautiful, for download.
Official Website
Download track #3 (Disc 1 of 2): Beautiful (2.2MB)

Daft Punk - Human After All
Daft Punk make unbelievely catchy beats, your dance hips might break in the process. Robot Rock is currently on the radio (does anyone know how to do the "robot rock" dance yet?) but I think, track #1, Human After All, is a better introduction to the album.
Official Website
Download track #1: Human After All (2.5MB)

Featured "past" music recommendations:

Explosions In The Sky - The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place
One of my favourite bands and one of the most underrated bands ever, Explosions In The Sky, are a brilliant instrumental rock band from Texas who recently contributed to american football movie, Friday Night Lights (Starring Billy Bob Thornton) set in Texas, by creating the score with all new original tracks specifically for the soundtrack. The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place album was released in 2003 and features 5 amazing tracks averaging 9 minutes in length. I offer track #4 for download and also, track #5 but its the shorter version (with strings) from the Friday Night Lights soundtrack. Enjoy!
Official Website
Download track #4: Memorial* (6.1MB)
Download track #5: Your Hand In Mine* (Friday Night Lights version, shorter and with strings) (6.0MB)
*Both via InSound.

Thievery Corporation - The Richest Man In Babylon
The album was released in 2002 but after hearing their songs on the Garden State OST and their latest, Cosmic Game, I decided to check out their earlier records. Similar sound to one of my favourite bands, The Postal Service, The Richest Man In Babylon is an amazing dance/electronica record that also grabs influence from spanish/jamaican/soul culture. Its brilliant, beautiful and the most perfect chilled album right now.
Official Website
Download track #9: Exilio (Exile) (2.1MB)

Notice

Music Recommendations will be a bit late this week because I'm not exactly feeling too great. Damn comeback weather.

Envy will also be late since she's stuck in London catching up with Bright Eyes.

No fear, a lot of gig reviews, recommendations and new track mixes coming your way.

In the meantime, check out the "good gigs" on the side menu for your nightly plans this week.

Triple J: Feature Album of The Week

Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze

Queens of the Stone Age need no introduction. They just truly rock. Expect chaos, catchy, super riffs, cameos, future #1s, the brilliant vocals of Mr. Josh Homme, and possibly a few surprises.

Don't forget: this Saturday from 5-6pm (Aus EST), they'll be playing the WHOLE album on Triple J (you can listen live online here). This has been mentioned earlier.

The album will be released on March 21st.
Official Website

New.Track.Mixes.

Updated the five track mixes (side bar) with four new tracks:

The Black Maria - Our Commitments a Sickness, from their debut Lead Us To Reason, released this year. Sort of punk, sort of rock, catchy stuff.

Armor for Sleep - Car Underwater, from What To Do When You Are Dead, which went to #1 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart and received rave reviews. Emo, anyone?

Beck - E-Pro, from the up-coming Guero. Sing-a-long to the "na na na".

Fischerspooner - Just Let Go, the first single and opening track off the up-coming Odyssey. Electronica is not dead.

Queens of the Stone Age:
Lullabies to Paralyze Full Album stream

This Saturday, March 12th, at 5-6pm (Australian EST) on Triple J, the new Queens of the Stone Age album, Lullabies to Paralyze, will be played in FULL for all you crazies. That's right, all the tracks from the new album will be played back to back in order (no commercials since Triple J is a commercial-free network) this Saturday afternoon!

The album won't be released until March 21st in Australia but you get to hear the whole record on radio so get your 90-minute audio cassette tapes ready. For the non-Australians out there, you can hear Triple J live online here.

Expect guest vocals from Garbage's Shirley Manson, The Distillers' Brody Dalle and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons. This is the first album without co-founder, Nick Oliveri (ex-bassiest), but its still great to have Josh Homme and co. back.

Featured.Music.Video.

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

New F.M.V. is Rebellion (Lies), one of the two US singles from their debut album, Funeral, by Montreal outfit, The Arcade Fire. Wake Up was recently featured but unlike that video, Rebellion (Lies) isn't a live footage and features the band walking around the beautiful autumn weather of lead singer/guitarist, Win Butler's, small Maine hometown.

The wonderfully shot video is available for streaming (RealPlayer or Windows Media Player) here (via MTV.com).

Fall Out Boy are undoubtly the best pop punk band around and if you haven't been acquainted with them yet, do so now.

They have a downloadable mp3 (5.15MB) album sampler of their up-coming album, From Under The Cork Tree, on the front page of their website. This much anticipated album is their second release and major-label (Island Records) debut, which will be released on May 3rd in the USA.

The Black Keys at The Gov

Date: Tuesday, March 8th 2005
Venue: The Governor Hindmarsh AKA The Gov
Time: 8pm door opens, 9pm gig start
Price: $40
Bands: The Black Keys w/ The Vasco Era

Holymotherofgod. That's one way to describe such an awesome night, despite it being a weeknight because poor old Adelaide had to give the weekend for the Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane (east coast) shows.

The Black Keys hail from Ohio, USA and they're one of coolest / rockiest / amazing rock duos out there. Good drums and kick ass guitar riffs are all you need. Melbourne's The Vasco Era have the honour of supporting them and they didn't disappoint either.

The Vasco Era are a rock trio from Melbourne and had two weekend gigs in Adelaide before tonight's big show. Their track, Kingswood is currently on high rotation on Triple J and were one of the featured bands during last November's Oz Music Month, which highlighted local Australian acts into the next big thing. The band came on stage around 9pm. They were energetic, lively and the singer had a catchy, raspy voice that got the crowd so involved in their set. The drums were brilliant, the bass was tight and the singer not only belted their songs well but swapped from percussion/steel drums to lead guitar (catchy riffs) and then, to the "slide" ukelele. Great stuff and perfect support for The Black Keys.

The Black Keys came on stage around 10.30pm and kicked off with their hit singles Thickfreakness and 10AM Automatic (which made the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown of 2004). Every single song they played with absolute passion and the crowd loved it. They also played some album favourites and actually did two encore sets, which pleased everyone. Funny moment of the night: Tiny incident when some guy rushed on stage to join in the fun but was moved back into the crowd. Ayway, it was such an awesome set and definitely worth my $40 (probably even more for their double encores!). I wished they played my favourite song, The Lengths, but it seems like their set tonight was more for the "rockier" side since none of their mellow favourites were played, unfortunately.

All in all, such an awesome night. I even have the set list for the more curious ones out there. The Gov was such a perfect venue, too. I don't like to rate gigs but definitely full marks for this one.

The Black Keys' Set List*:
Thickfreakness
10AM Automatic
Hard Row
Busted
Stack Shot Billy

New.Side.Menu.

I've updated the side menu with weekly goodness, which is a quick side reference of what good gigs are on this week and should check out in Adelaide. Plus, the new release pick, which is my pick of the best choice from the new releases of that week in Adelaide (sometimes, I might have 2). This is just a quick and easier look-up than rummaging/skimming through the blog posts for the complete up-coming gig guides (click here for the last one).

Envy will be updating hers concerning Cardiff's gigs and releases as soon as she gets around to it.

Triple J: Hottest 100 Volume 12 album

Triple J's Hottest 100 Volume 12 album is out now and features 40 tracks that made the Hottest 100 countdown of 2004, including The Killers, Eskimo Joe, Dallas Crane, The Von Bondies, Interpol and many more. Sanity has the full-track listings here.
[Ed's Sidenote: Good birthday gift and for a double CD, I saw it for $25 at JB Hi-Fi and I think some discount stores like Target and K-Mart sell it for $22. OK, enough plugs.]

Music Recommendations Week 07/03/05

The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
Amazing concept sophomore bilingual (in English and Spanish) album from one of the most respected and influential rock acts right now. Frances The Mute is almost 1.5 hours long with tracks ranging from over 5 minutes to over 13 minutes, where the song changes tone, beat and melody all through, signifying the different parts in each track (think what Green Day did with their American Idiot album). Might get some time to get used to for the newer fans and the reviews for this album are split and varied, but as a former fan of At The Drive-In, I couldn't miss a chance to recommend this album, which could quite possibly be one of my top 10 albums of this year (along with Bloc Party), and its only March. I offer you a download of the first part (of five parts) of the final track Cassandra Gemini, so the ending is a bit off but its the best I could do due to bandwidth and its my favourite part/track of such a long song concept. Track #2 The Widow is currently on high-rotation on most radio stations.

Download track #5: Cassandra Gemini I: Tarantism (3.3MB)

The Kills - No Wow
Catchy indie rock duo for fans of The White Stripes but with more focus on the female vocals. The Good Ones is the first single of the album and is already a top 10 hit.
Official Website
Download track #4: The Good Ones (2.4MB)

Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams
Cool.Catchy.Relax-Let's-Catchasurf. type music. Jack Johnson is possibly the coolest male singer/acoustica-geetar right now (no contest, Conor). Love it. Jack is going to tour Australia including Adelaide and will be playing at Memorial Drive on March 31st, Thursday, with Xavier Rudd, G-Love & Special Sauce and Katalyst.

Featured "past" music recommendation:

Desaparecidos - Read Music Speak Spanish
Released in 2002, Read Music Speak Spanish was one of the records I nearly missed out on (it got lost among the hype of Taking Back Sunday/Victory Records, etc.) but glad I didn't. Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst's fronts this five-piece band whose sound reminds me of old Get Up Kids (one of my personal favourites) but with a more political/literal outlook towards their music, especially compared to Bright Eyes. I definitely prefer this than current Bright Eyes' material, and wished Conor didn't "quit"/halted this band's new music (originally slated for a 2004 release) to record his current two Bright Eyes' albums, but in the meantime, check this out. Anyway, Bright Eyes will be in Australia late this month for his solo and R.E.M. support tour in late March/early April.
