Triple J: Feature Album of The Week

Ben Lee - Awake Is The New Sleep

Australia's own Ben Lee is back with an album that is said to be a sort of healing process, a "wake", to his break-up with Hollywood actress, Claire Danes. Triple J is featuring this amazing new album all week and you get to hear tracks like the recent hit, Gamble Everything For Love, the pop-rock catchy sing-a-long Catch My Disease and the sweet ballad Into The Dark. The new record is so catchy and full of those pop-rock goodness you've expected from the young 26-year-old who brought you one of my favourite songs ever, Cigarettes Will Kill You.

In his own words: "you go to bed one night feeling that you’ve come to a dead end, that everything has been said and done, that there is no magic in the world...but the next morning you wake up - and everything’s changed.
wake up. wake up. wake up. this is an album about waking up.

The Arcade Fire - Wake Up

The Arcade Fire's video for Wake Up is available for download here (Quicktime Movie). Its a live video for the first single released from Funeral, their amazing and successful debut for the Canadian band. According to a recent interview (with Pitchfork), videos for Rebellion (Lies) and Neighborhood #2 (Laika) are on the way. Rebellion (Lies) will be the next single in the US whilst Neighborhood #2 (Laika) will be the first UK single. Will post more info once the videos become available.

Also, check out a clip of the band performing Wake Up with some kids on DC's children television programme, Pancake Mountain (currently available on cable access), here (Quicktime Movie).

New.Track.Mixes.

Updated the five track mixes (side bar) with five new tracks:

Pinback - AFK, from 2004's Summer in Abaddon, one of the best songs of the album. One of the best bands around. Via Toolshed Media.

Gratitude - Last, from new self-titled album, Gratitude, Jonah Matranga's (also of ex-Far and onelinedrawing) new band is amazing. They've already created a major buzz in all those punk/rock/emo message board/forums... could they live up to the hype? I think so. Via PureVolume.

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies), one of two singles released from Funeral. Personally, my favourite track of the album. Via The Crutch.

Cursive - The Recluse, from 2003's The Ugly Organ. A bit of a flashback but still a great album. Via Epitonic.

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - Worlds Apart, sounds like Waltzing Matilda but still catchy as. First single off new album, Worlds Apart. Via The Crutch.

Music Recommendations Week 21/02/05

This week, I am all mixed up. Old + New.

Fall Out Boy - My Heart Will Always Be B-Side to My Tongue [EP]
I am so loving back this EP. Pat's voice is awesome and Pete's lyrics are still so 'Pete'. The cover on Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart still wins me every time. This album is acoustic and it comes with a DVD with their live performances, story, videos and a few extras. There's also a hidden footage in there so be sure to check that out.

Download Track #3: Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner (3.3MB) via PureVolume

Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety
I like this album. I mean...just give them a listen and I think you would know what I mean. Oh and it's screamo and I like the singer's voice. My favourite track is track #2: A Boy Brushed in Red...Living in Black & White.
Official website
Download Track #4: Reinventing Your Exit (4.1MB) via PureVolume

Copeland - Beneath Medicine Tree
I really like the singer's voice. Emo stuff. It's really nice to listen to this album on rainy days and just cold weather. Favourite song from the album: Brightest.

Band Plug: The Grates

If you are in Australia, and haven't heard of The Grates, where have you freaking been? Patience Hodgson (vocals), John Patterson (guitars) and Alana Skying (drums) are The Grates, hailing from Brisbane and whose sound is like the whole fuck-you-punk-rock-no-rules, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Go! Team with a girlpunkmesh. Or something. Their E.P., The Ouch. The Touch., was released on February 14th, with the catchiest tracks like Message (currently hitting the airwaves at Triple J) and Trampoline (which was recently used in a Just Jeans ad).

The Grates have finished an Australian tour lauching their E.P. and are getting ready for their support tour with Death From Above 1979 and Wolf & Cub in the east coast. After that, they'll be heading off to the UK, USA and Canada for some tours (and some with fellow Australian gem, Sarah Blasko). If you're from those countries, check them out and you'll love them. Tour dates here.

Music Recommendations Week 21/02/05

This week I am all for "indie hip-hop" and a Mars Volta incarnate.

Gym Class Heroes - The Papercut Chronicles
Punk rock indie label Fueled by Ramen's latest offering is an interesting hip-hop outfit called Gym Class Heroes. Their debut is full of witty lyrics rapped with cool punk guitars and catchy basslines. A definite wildcard in the punk rock/emo scene (touring extensively with popular punk bands Fall Out Boy, Halfwayhome, Punchline, etc.) doesn't stop Gym Class Heroes to start making their own scene. The 18-track album includes guest vocals from Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy.

Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
Political.Catchy.Brilliant. Eminem who?

Download track #7: Dance Monkey (3.4MB) via Epitaph Records

LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
This is why I really want to be in a dance rock band. Or some sort. Is Daft Punk playing in your house?
Official Website
Download track #3 (Disc 1 of 2-Discs): Tribulations (3.4MB)

The Sound of Animals Fighting - Tiger And The Duke
12-piece supergroup Mars Volta-influenced prog-rock post-hardcore punk band. Hell yes: Anthony Green (Saosin, Circa Survive), Rich Balling (Rx-Bandits/founder of the concept behind Revolution on Canvas book), Armor for Sleep, Finch, maybe Brand New and Cursive. Its actually a mystery who is behind the masks of the 12 animals. Brilliant stuff, though.

New.Track.Mixes.

I've updates new downloads for the five track mixes:

Low - Monkey, first track from their The Great Destroyer album.

April In Andalusia - Black Cat, beautiful acoustic/folk track from Omaha's all-female quartet. I'm a sucker for cellos.

Iron and Wine - Woman King, title track from the forth-coming Woman King EP.

Bright Eyes - We Are Nowhere and It's Now, from the country-folk album, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.

Triple J: Feature Album of The Week

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

Triple J is featuring another one of my music recommendations. All this week you get to hear tracks from the cool full-length debut of UK's "next big thing" and includes their hits Banquet and Helicopter. Visit their official and popular unofficial websites.

MC Lars - Signing Emo

MC Lars' video for Signing Emo is available for download here (Quicktime Movie). Its a piss take on the emo scene/bands and even features a faux band called Hearts That Hate. Remind you of anyone? More importantly, where can I get that EMOCRAP t-shirt?

The Laptop EP will be released on March 14th 2005 with a Bonus Track ("Rockstar"), as well as the two music videos, iGeneration and Signing Emo. Music Recommendations Week 14/02/05

This week I am all for Brit-Pop!, that Trail of Dead band and HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Bloc Party's 2004 self-titled EP was THE EP of last year, and in 2005, they finally release their full-length debut, Silent Alarm. Its so catchy, infectious and beautiful all the same time and this fresh UK band could quite possibly be the sound of 2005. You will love this.

The Shins at Fowler's Live

I went to see The Shins in a sold-out gig supported by Adelaide band The Pharoahs and Melbourne indie rockers Even. In 3 words: It Freaking Rocked!

First up were local Adelaide three-piece, The Pharoahs, whose sound reminds me of The White Stripes' Jack White's vocals with catchy hooks similar to D4, Dallas Crane and I hate to say it, Jet. They played for about 45 minutes to a small crowd and were tight. They just seem excited that people were catching their gig even though punters were aching for The Shins already. I say, good support but they should be a bit more confident.

Next were popular indie rock outfit, Even, and they tore the place up with Ash's awesome guitar licks and the tight bass and drum combination. They were amazing live for a band that's been around for 10 or so years, still taking it underground (but have made a few famous fans including The Dandy Warhols). I loved their set and wished they played for more than 1 hour but the crowd was already hyping for The Shins, so another 45-minute set had to end.

Yes, The Shins finally hit the stage around 11.15pm and the crowd went nuts. And I mean, crazy nuts. Marty spoke the most for the band because he is the goofy, loud one (and I must remind you all, he is my favourite reality TV show contestant, Elyse Sewell's, cheating ex-). So Marty isn't all that, obviously. Again, another tight bass and drum combination. James Mercer is a brilliant singer that even the crowd are too scared/chilled to sing along to him (but that didn't stop a few people), just so we could hear his amazing voice sing those eclectic lyrics and feel it. They were just freaking amazing live.

The Shins performed all their popular hits from 2001's Oh, Inverted World and 2002's Chutes Too Narrow, including Caring is Creeping, Mine's Not a High Horse, Young Pilgrims, So Says I, Fighting in a Sack, Kissing the Lipless, my favourite track Pink Bullets, the Garden State hit New Slang and they closed with Know Your Onion, which ended with Marty giving me a knowing nod and a wave because I was wearing my "Do You Know Your ONION?" t-shirt. I think he wanted the t-shirt but since its Shanny's custom-made for me, he's missing out. He seems nice but still I'm siding with Elyse.

Highlights of their set: Marty being all dance rock and playing a cool 80s type riff on his keyboard in between songs with a little drum track backing it. Somehow, I expected him to belt out a Scissor Sisters' number but that didn't happen. During Pink Bullets, one girl next to me fainted because it was hot and she looked dehydrated. Her boyfriend and friend helped her up and I yelled for the security guard who gave her a bottle of water. She still felt sick and since it was towards the end of the song (my favourite song of all things), James who was right infront of me asked if she's ok and I just gave him a knowing shrug and he got confused. You just don't expect this to happen at a Shins gig but as Marty said after James talked ot me, "I guess we just really rocked her out". I still blame the poor ventilation.

All in all, best gig I've been in ages and The Shins didn't disappoint at all. The majority of the crowd were huge fans of The Shins and the atmosphere was amazing for a small Adelaide venue like Fowler's Live. Over 4 hours of music for AUS$40 for a packed, small crowd. Not bad at all!

Triple J: Feature Album of The Week

The Arcade Fire - Funeral

The Arcade Fire are it. Funeral is too brilliant for a debut and sure make the french-canadians proud (over the mess they have with Simple Plan and Celine Dion, I'm not surprised). The album finally gets featured on Triple J (after the hype me and JJJ's Chris Taylor made, this had to happen!) and all this week you get to hear all their beautiful, intense, theatrical-like music that will just make you live. Julian, this is the answer. This is it.

Celebrating Triple J finally recognising the Funeral album, I've added track #7 Wake Up to my five track mixes (along with Bright Eyes).

Can't wait!

Music Recommendations Week 07/02/05

This week I am all for the "acoustica".

Various Artists - Punk Goes Acoustic
As one bright singer once said, "You're a sucker for anything acoustic". Hell yeah! Who wasn't in 2003? All hit tracks from a collection of punk/emo bands re-recorded for this acoustic compilation. Favourite tracks include Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team) by Taking Back Sunday and Swing Life Away by Rise Against.

Iron and Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
SubPop's Iron and Wine is one very talented man, Sam Beam. This album is full of beautiful folky acoustic tracks, with the very beautiful Naked As We Came and the upbeat Free Until They Cut Me Down. Every single track is gorgeous and lyrically mesmerising. Don't forget this one in your next campfire music night.
Official Website
Download Track #2: Naked As We Came (mp3)

Aloha - Here Comes Everyone
The album from the Pitchfork-type-dream-super-indie-band is full of those catchy indie tunes that will make your iPod go whoa. Trust me, my iPod just went whoa Aloha! just now.
Official Website
Download Track #3: Summer Away (mp3)

I can make a mess like nobody's business - I can make a mess like nobody's business EP
Ace Enders talent is no surprise. Frontman of New Jersey's The Early November who give the trendy music genre, "emo", a good name, Ace takes on his own solo project and the result is I can make a mess like nobody's business. The long name is frustrating but the debut EP is just beautiful. Different sound from The Early November but still the strong vocals from Ace and a lot more experimentation on samples from random conversations in So I finally decided to give myself a reason (which is slightly similar to The Mountain Range In My Living Room by The Early November) to gorgeous strings in Whispering Actually. Hopefully a full-length is in the works (a bit after The Early November's next record release, perhaps?).

Band Plug: Mr Wednesday

Saturday night I went to the Grace Emily and a band called Mr Wednesday played. I was so impressed that they are my first band plug. They sound like a mix of Radiohead, Massive Attack and Sigur Ros with their awesome live presence and the keyboard player's nifty drum tracking machine. I even bought their EP for $5 after the show and love it. If you like your electronic, experimental indie with cool sample sounds, you'll love this local Adelaide band. Check out their song, Animosity (right click, "Save Target As..."), track #3 from their 2003 self-titled EP. The band are also playing at Supermild on Thursday, 17th Feb for Free. Go check them out!

Triple J: Feature Album of The Week

Handsome Boy Modeling School - White People

Handsome Boy Modeling School are two amazing producers, Prince Paul and Dan "The Automator" Nakamura (whose last popular project was The Gorillaz). This catchy album features guest vocals from Cat Power, Mike Patton (Faith No More), RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand) and De La Soul. Featured all this week on Triple J.

Green Day.

06:30, Friday, 4th February 2005.

I'm so sorry that i forgot to mention that Green Day was going to rock out Cardiff International Arena. The gig was scheduled at 7:30pm at Cardiff International Arena (CIA) on the 3rd of February. I mistakenly thought that the gig was going to be on the 2nd of March (you know how sometimes dates are reversed e.g. 13/12 to 12/31). The queue to go in was long enough to go to the NEXT building's corner. The show was definitely sold out. Most people were wearing green and black. New Found Glory opened for them or as some of the people i encountered near the venue said "Some band from Miami" when i asked them who opened for Green Day. According to sources (a.k.a people i asked in the streets), the show was awesome and everyone had great fun in the mosh pit. Overall, i assumed it was a great gig. Hooray for Green Day! I think they gave out free posters too because near the venue after the gig ended, a guy shouted 'LAST OF THE FREE POSTER! COME AND GET IT!' while waving this poster that was half his height but i'm not too sure about that. I'm sorry for mixing up the dates. Green Day would be back in UK with Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World and Simple Plan this june but as i checked, most of the shows during that time has been sold out. Seeing as it would be summer then and the band line-up is good (TBS!!!), it's understandable. Good luck with finding the tickets if you feel like going.

Agent Blue - Gig review

The Revolutions kickstarted the show at around 8:30pm in Barfly, Cardiff. The crowd wasn't much but there was a pretty good vibe, i didn't see them much though. After that, Last Partisan came on. I think their normal guitarist couldn't make it so a different guy took over. Their set was pretty heavy, loads of screaming and pretty rad guitar riffs. Agent Blue came last, there wasn't a lot of people so i had a good view and some pretty good shots of the band. The singer, at times, got down to the floor where the audience was watching and sang there. Merch was also great. They were giving out free patches, badges and stickers if you put down your e-mail in the clipboard for their mailing list or something. I got myself their old CD for 3 pounds. There was an after-show clubbing with the boys from Agent Blue in Ifor Bach (where Lamb of God, Atreyu, The Black Maria, etc. had performed), some other people and i went there with the band but they couldn't get us in (they said they had tried so yeah.) so i went back home. Here are a few pictures i took during the gig, i only took shots of Agent Blue performing, sorry.

New.Track.Mixes.

I've updates new downloads for the five track mixes:

The Fiery Furnaces - Single Again, a track from their new EP.

The Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachorism, which made no.30 on Triple J's Hottest 100 Countdown this year. Links to their myspace profile, which streams the song.

Lior - Daniel, a beautiful track from this week's Triple J feature album.

The White Stripes - Jolene (live), it made no.10 on Triple J's Hottest 100 Countdown this year for a reason. Great track from their live album recorded in Blackpool, England at the Empress Ballroom.

Music Recommendations Week 31/01/2005

Music i'm listening to this week, mostly old emo stuff.

Something Corporate - North

Something Corporate is probably in every emo kid's mp3/CD/cassette player but it isn't really their fault, some tracks are pretty damn good. In this album, lead singer, Andrew McMahon, kicks it with his piano and the rest of the band did quite an impressive job, too. Listen to the added bonus tracks of this album HERE. Good emo songs to make out to :)
Official Website
Favourite track: #5 Me & The Moon

Mae - Destination: B-sides (Yah, the album cover is intentionally made to look like that shown above)

This album's acoustic songs are my top repeats. It's pretty chill to listen to if you just want to lay back and relax. If you like Death Cab For Cutie, you probably would like them. Check out the song, Tisbury Lane, it's to the death cab kind of music. I like the lead singer's voice. Destination: B-sides also features live tracks.
Official website
Favourite track: #2 Suspension

Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism

For five months, I pronounced 'Transatlanticm' as 'Transatlanti-cism' until i bought the album and asked Anna how it was pronounced (that's 'Transatlantic-ism'). An album i don't regret buying. This also falls under the category of my must-haves. Again, this album is nice to hear if you just want to chill at home or anywhere. Best line i've heard from a new year song that contradicts everything new year (resolutions, a new you, blablabla): "so this is the new year and i don't feel any different" (Taken from the song 'The New Year').
Official website.
Favourite track: #6 Tiny Vessels

Something i think people might like.

The Autumns - The Autumns (self-titled)

I've read some pretty good reviews about this album. Probably worth checking out the album.

Track listings:
1. End
2. Hush, Plain Girls
3. Deathly Little Dreams
4. Désolé
5. Flies in the Eyes of the Queen
6. Every Sunday Sky
7. Slumberdoll (Listen)
8. Edmond & Edward
9. Wish Stars
