Mason - You Were Supposed To Be Beautiful
From West Palm Beach, Florida, five-piece outfit Mason, sound like a cross-between The Blood Brothers and Taking Back Sunday with the craziest, insane "scream-o" vocals. I'm not a fan of screamo / hardcore but this album is amazing, punk rock that works and these kids are going to go far.

Z-Trip - Shifting Gears

Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, LA-based DJ Z-Trip, has released the hip-hop debut of the year. Shifting Gears includes cameos from Lyrics Born, Soup (Jurassic 5), Busdriver, Chuck D (Public Enemy), Supernatural, Murs and Chester Bennington (Linkin Park). I'm not a huge fan of hip-hop but this record is strong, well-produced and catchy as hell. Download my personal favourite track, Breakfast Club, to hear what I mean.

Starting today, you get to hear all the tracks from the album at various times for 1 week on Triple J, which you can listen to live online here.

The Panics - Sleeps Like A Curse

Five-piece Perth band, The Panics, are back with a third full-length album, Sleeps Like A Curse, which was live recorded in Sydney, Australia. The album has a great dose of that live guitar sound that Australian rock is proud off and the release of this record also launches a headlined national Australian tour starting in Canberra on August 10th. The band will be in Adelaide on Friday, August 26th at the Adelaide University Bar with special guests Pilate from Canada.

Starting this Friday, you get to hear all the tracks from the album at various times for 1 week on Triple J, which you can listen to live online here.

The album will be released on Sunday, August 7th.

Panic! At The Disco - Relax Relapse (Demo) (5.3MB), from 2005's Fueled By Ramen Summer Mix. One of my favourite unsigned bands from last year (but now taken under the wing by Fueled By Ramen Records), these kids may sound like an emo version of The Killers but even catchier disco/dance rock. Their debut album, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out, comes out on September 27th (through Decaydance Records) and is possibly the debut record of the year. Via PureVolume.

Bit By Bats - All Night (1.5MB), from 2005's Let's Go Romeo EP. Adelaide band, now based in Melbourne. More catchy dance rock from one of my favourite EPs this year. Don't forget, they're playing at Jive with local bands, Pharaohs and La Femme La Fever, on Saturday night, August 27th. Tickets at the door, 8pm. Via their official website.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth (4MB), from 2005's Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Definitely the catchiest song on the album and my personal favourite track. Too goddamn dance-able.

Anberlin - The Undeveloped Story (2.4MB), from 2003's Blueprints For The Black Market. Catchiest song from their debut album. More importantly, why did they get rid of the cowbells?

Boys Night Out - Medicating (4.6MB), from 2005's Trainwreck. Listening to this album a lot and can't seem to get the hand claps of this song out of my head. More hand claps, please! Via Ferret Records.

Acceptance - Phantoms
Their major full-length debut from Columbia Records, Acceptance have come a long way since their signing to indie label, Militia Group. Phantoms is gorgeous pop rock; reminds me of old Something Corporate (the piano riffs have reminiscence to Leaving Through The Window) with one of the best male vocals around. Their single, Different, is on high radio rotation in the US but is probably one of the weaker tracks compared to others in the album. With the catchy, strong opener Take Cover (available for download below), cutting to the beautiful ballad, So Contagious and the more up-beat track, In Too Far (download below); the record starts off strong and finishes off strong. One of my favourite pop records in a long time.

Boys Night Out - Trainwreck
The follow-up to their 2003 release, Make Yourself Sick, Boys Night Out are now a six-piece (which includes new female member, Kara Dupuy on synths and vocals) and their new album, Trainwreck is no more of that "scream-o", one-guitar sound but more of the catchy pop-punk rock approach as can be heard on their new single, Medicating (you can download the single here and check out the video for that song here [Quicktime Video]). It's catchy pop-punk with both male and female vocals and a lot of hand-claps so that all sounds good to me.

The National - Alligator
One of my favourite finds from InSound. When I finally got the album, Alligator, it was 13 strong tracks from their third release from the beautiful ballad, Baby We'll Be Fine, to the single All The Wine (available for download below) and the amazing closer, Mr. November. It's Bowie-esque vocals for Interpol fans.

Feist - Let It Die
Leslie Feist is one of coolest female singers right now. Hailing from Canada, her album, Let It Die, is finally getting noticed and who could ignore the cool sounds and sweet vocals especially with the folky opening tracks, Gatekeeper and the popular single, Mushaboom (even Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst agrees and covers it here via Brooklyn Vegan), and the soulful dance / jazz number, Inside And Out. Head Of Femur - Elliott Gould Is In California Split (2.6MB), from 2005's Hysterical Stars. Catchy indie pop, and sing-a-long to the "ooohhss". Make you want to cruise around in California. Via InSound.

Kisschasy - United Paper People

Kisschasy, fresh from a sold-out national support tour for After The Fall, are ready to release their debut full-length record called United Paper People. 13 tracks of catchy pop punk including the hit first single, Do-Do's & Whoa-oh's, the Melbourne four-piece are up-and-go for a massive next few months of touring for the album; including support for some of the Shihad NSW shows at the end of this month, their own headlined national tour for the album in September, and the local support act for the Simple Plan / All-American Rejects Australian tour in October. Plus, the album is available as a limited edition 2CD with a bonus 4-track Acoustic disc.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Definitely going to be in my Top 10 albums of 2005. It's what the indie kids are loving right now, especially ones with the 80s nostaglia, it's like Talking Heads, its sort of Bowie and maybe some Spoon. From the Interpol-ish, Details Of The War to the very "dance-able" The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth and the catchy pop-sound of In This Home On Ice to the tambourine-infected Heavy Metal, this is one band to look out for and is all the buzz for the Summer (or fun for our Winter, anyway). They've got a bunch of tracks available on their official website, and below are some of them for download.

The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree
What is not to love about The Mountain Goats? Catchy folk rock? Of course, but the best thing about this band is John Darnielle's lyrics of wit, honesty and the only nasal vocals I can stand. Also definitely going to be one of my favourite albums of 2005, you can download two of my favourite tracks off the album, the intense Dilaudid and the hit single currently on high radio rotation, Dance Music. The band will be in Adelaide on September 15th at Jive for their Australian Tour 2005: A Vegemite Odyssey so be sure to catch them. Tickets available from either Venuetix or Big Star Records at $33.

Peabody - The Weight Just Right (3MB), from 2005's The New Violence. One of my favourite Sydney bands and just the whispers in the beginning of the song got me hooked. Via Triple J.

Queens Of The Stone Age - Burn The Witch (2.5MB), from 2005's Lullabies To Paralyze. Since it's Queens Of The Stone Age WEEK on Triple J, I bring you one of my favourite tracks off their latest album, featuring the dude from ZZ Top. Rock on!

Christoper Bauer - Somebody's Baby (2.9MB), from 2004's The Elliott Smith Tribute CD. A more low-key tribute album for (my personal favourite) the late Elliott Smith, this is my favourite track from the tribute record, which covers Twilight from Elliott Smith's last record, From A Basement On The Hill (it's called Somebody's Baby, because in the early "leaked" days of the record, that was the title). Beautiful cover.

Your Black Star - Sound From The Ground
Your Black Star are an amazing three-piece band from Louisville, Kentucky you should get to know. Their sound is incredible, from frontman Jeremy Johnson's passionate vocals to one of the tightest bass and drum combinations I've ever heard. Their debut full-length, Sound From The Ground is out now through Building Records and you can download the opening track from the album. The band will be in Adelaide on August 14th at Enigma Bar with Sydney's Staying At Home, Melbourne's Horsell Common and Adelaide's Mere Theory. Tickets will be at the door on the night.

Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal
One of the best melodic punk rock albums of this year so far. Released earlier this year, Never Take Friendship Personal, Anberlin's second full-length, is one heck of an album, all 11 tracks: catchy, melodic and fantastic production. The band will be in Adelaide on July 22nd at Enigma Bar with Melbourne's Antiskeptic and Adelaide's In Fiction (July 22nd... crazy night of gigs in Adelaide: also Interpol and The Go-Betweens). Triple J: Feature Album Of The Week

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

Sufjan Stevens continues his 50 States project with the state of Illinois and the album has already been described as "Album Of The Year" by Pitchfork plus on a personal note, it's my favourite album of the year so far. Illinois is beautiful folk music, amazing acoustic ballads, gorgeous orchestral tracks. 74 minutes over 22 tracks of perfection; if you haven't caught the Sufjan buzz yet, now is the time.

Sidenote: The album is pushed back for release in the US because of a dispute with the cover art that originally had a Superman on the cover. DC Comics who own the trademark copyright are not impress (more about that here). However, it is already out now in Australia (via Spunk! Records) with the Superman on the cover and in Adelaide, Big Star Records stock them and are available in limited copies. Collector's item? I got mine.

Starting this Friday, you get to hear all the tracks from the album at various times for 1 week on Triple J, which you can listen to live online here.

Last Friday night, I went to the free Brunatex + No Through Road at Exeter. It was amazingly packed, there was a line-up, which isn't very common at the Exeter (but with also the end of Uni exams, etc., it wasn't really a surprise) and I only caught half-way through Brunatex's and couldn't even enter the beer garden where the bands played. Fortunately, I was allowed in for No Through Road's set but was at the very back so photos I took for my Flickr were poor and few.

Central Coast's After The Fall are one punk rock outfit to look out for. With their recent addition to the US radio airwaves, signed to local major label, Mushroom Records, and support from major corps., such as MTV, Channel [V] and not just the alternative radio station, Triple J, but also mainstream, commerical radio like, Triple M and Nova; these 5-piece outfit have come a long way and expect more big things to come.

This Friday night, July 8th at Enigma Bar, catch them with Melbourne's Kisschasy and Adelaide's The Open Season for an All-Ages show, which opens at 7.30pm. Tickets are $16.30 from Big Star Records or Venuetix but are currently very limited (SOLD-OUT at most Big Stars).

Their new single, Concrete Boots, is out now as an online single purchase and you can hear it on high-rotation at most radio stations. Their new album, Always Forever Now, will be due out sometime in August.

Youth Group - Skeleton Jar
Sydney's Youth Group received a lot of press attention when they were announced as the Australian artist signed to popular US indie label Epitaph Records (also home to Elliott Smith, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and of course, Bad Religion). Their second album, Skeleton Jar, is beautiful pop/rock that has won fans such as Chris Walla from Death Cab For Cutie and raved reviews from the music press. You can catch the band in Adelaide at Enigma Bar on Friday, August 19th with local support from Red Riders and Special Patrol. You can buy tickets from either Venuetix or Big Star Records from $13.20. Download the hit single, Skeleton Jar, and another track, Someone Else's Dream, from the album.

Faker - Addicted Romantic
Sydney's Faker may sound like they should be part of the British dance/rock scene (like Kaiser Chiefs and Maximo Park) but this local band has caught enough buzz in the music scene especially with the recent signing to Mushroom Records and the release of their debut full-length Addicted Romantic. It's "post-mod rock", it's unbelievebly catchy and it's one of the best local debuts of the year. You can download the very popular radio hit, Quarter To Three and the short but brilliant track, Enough, from the album.

On Saturday night, I went to two gigs: Adelaide's Straight 2 Video playing a free, cool show at the Grace Emily and Sydney's Staying At Home at Enigma Bar. Apologies to the support bands at the Staying At Home gig, Straight 2 Video played a longer set than usual since The Green Circles cancelled and therefore, had to miss the support acts. Anyway, I took a bunch of photos for my Flickr.

Buck 65 - Secret House Against The World

Canada's Buck 65 (real name, Rich Terfry) is what you might call "country/hip-hop" or "folk/rap". His third LP, Secret House Against The Worldis probably his finest and complex release yet, more usual raspy "country-style" vocals and very diverse sounds. Recorded in Chicago and Paris, if you haven't heard of this guy yet, now's your chance.

Starting this Friday, you get to hear all the tracks from the album at various times for 1 week on Triple J, which you can listen to live online here.

The album is set for release on Sunday, July 3rd.

Fresh from a string of east coast gigs, Adelaide's Save And Exit are one of the newer local buzz bands right now so before the hype gets overrated you should check them out this Thursday night at Enigma Bar with fellow local buzz band, Quiet Child (who you might have caught their record as a "slip in" in some copies of Rip It Up street press magazine), plus Double Handed and Team Drum Kit. Tickets are at $7 from the door, which opens at 8pm.

Download the first track, Scars (via PureVolume), off Save And Exit's new EP, A Mind Full Of Change, and their next gig will be for the Motor Ace support at Fowler's Live on Friday, July 8th.

Updated the five track mixes (side bar) with five tracks all available from PureVolume:

Adelphi - Attention (3.9MB), one the newer bands on Drive-Thru Records and this was featured on the 2004 record label sampler. Extremely catchy.

Rise Against - Give It All (4.2MB), from 2004's Siren Song Of The Counter Culture. A track from one of my favourite punk albums of last year. One of the acts definitely to watch out for on the up-coming Taste Of Chaos tour.

Just Surrender - Tell Me Everything (3.8MB), from 2005's If These Streets Could Talk. Pop punk with a very catchy melodic chorus.

Flashlight Arcade - November (6.3MB), from 2005's The Art Of Blacking Out. Previously music recommended but still on very high rotation on my playlist. Extremely good punk rock.

The Early November - Decoration (4.5MB), a very rough demo that will be re-recorded for their second full-length which is scheduled to be released in March of 2006 in the United States.

One of Australia's finest blues and roots acts, The Beautiful Girls are back with a new album, We're Already Gone, a great follow-up to 2003's Learn Yourself.

Starting this Friday, you get to hear all the tracks from the album at various times for 1 week on Triple J, which you can listen to live online here.

The band will be in Adelaide on Thursday, August 4th and Friday, August 5th at Governor Hindmarsh to promote the album and you can get tickets from Venuetix at $23.80 + booking fee.

The album is set for release on Sunday, July 3rd.

Sydney's Gelbison are one of the most eclectic and underrated bands in the country. This Friday night, June 24th at Jive, the 5-piece is stripped down to just the two brothers, Edo and Nadav, with their acoustic guitars for a great gig not to be missed. Supported by Adelaide's No Through Road (who were great as the support for the Black Nielson gig I saw last week), doors open at 8pm and tickets are at the door for $12.

Funeral For A Friend - Hours
UK's Funeral For A Friend are back with an album that is less "scream-o", more melodic and the most diverse release yet. Its intense, solid and just a great punk rock album. From the fast, upbeat tracks like End Of Nothing to the beautiful, electonic-esque ballad, Sonny (both for download); they're definitely one of the top bands to look forward to in the up-coming Taste of Chaos tour on October 23rd at Adelaide Entertainment Centre (tickets on sale now from BASS Ticketing at $64.60).

Sydney's After The Fall are one of my favourite pop punk / melodic rock local acts from first catching them as the support act on the Antiskeptic tour in 2002. Their debut album released last year was a strong debut effort and includes the infectious hit singles, Sunshine Showers and Mirror Mirror (both for download) and also a song that I loved, which was in their debut release EP, Three Quater Binding (also for download) that made it into their album. Mellowdrone - And Repeat (3.3MB), from the downloadable EP, A Demonstration Of Intellectual Property. Other mp3 bloggers have perfusely raved about them. I caved in, downloaded their EPs (in full over here) and honestly, can't stop playing them. Beautiful indie pop, indeed. And Repeat is one of my favourite tracks. Via their official website.

Annie - My Heartbeat (4.3MB), from 2004's Anniemal. Bubblegum pop but with a cool electronic edge, this Norwegian pop princess is loved by all the indie hipsters with her catchy album last year. Via InSound.

Tambalane - Little Miss Liar (2.2MB), from 2005's Little Miss Liar. Australian pop/rock with a bit of quirk. Catch these guys supporting Perth's End Of Fashion next Saturday, June 25th at Jive with Adelaide's The Trafalgars. Tickets from either Venuetix or Big Star Records at $13.60. Via Triple J.

The Pictures - Pieces Of Eight

A Melbourne three-piece fronted by singer, songwriter and You Am I guitarist, Davey Lane (who was also a member of Oz Rock supergroup, The Wrights), and this album is the debut record for his band, The Pictures.

The band will be in Adelaide on Wednesday, July 20th with The Vandas at Enigma Bar and you can get tickets from either Big Star Records or Venuetix.

I went to three gigs last week: Lior at The Gov, The Red Paintings at Jive and Evermore at The Gov. I took a bunch of photos at all three gigs for my Flickr. All three gigs were great, Lior was fantastic as usual, The Red Paintings were great but not that many people (possibly because of the sold-out Evermore show at The Gov on the same night) and Evermore were alright but the three support acts, The Panda Band, The Vasco Era and theredsunband were amazing.

The J Award (previously posted here and here) has two new nominations for 2005's Australian Album of the Year and its Architecture In Helsinki's In Case We Die and Cog's The New Normal.

Both albums were previously featured on Triple J and both bands had huge success in their recent Australian tours. The winner of the J award will be announced at the end of November following Triple J's Oz Music Month.

Triple J: Feature Album Of The Week

Foo Fighters - In Your Honor

In Your Honor, the double album from the Foo Fighters is finally featured on Triple J, and features the single, Best Of You. Disc 1 is mostly "rock" whilst the second is the "acoustic" album (ala Bright Eyes?). The album also features cameos from Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin and even Norah Jones. One of my personal anticipated albums of the year.

Starting this Friday, you get to hear all the tracks from both albums at various times for 1 week on Triple J, which you can listen to live online here.

Triple J also has an online photo gallery of the recent "secret" gig at Sydney's Metro (everyone knew about it, Dave was even on Denton!) up at their featured gallery.

The album is set for release on Sunday, June 12th.

Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This To Memory
Their last album, I Am The Movie, was one of my favourites of 2003. The Moogs, singer's Justin Pierre's amazing vocals and their brilliant catchy riffs. Commit This To Memory was produced by Blink 182's Mark Hoppus and is one of the most anticipated punk rock records of this year. Head Automatica - Decadence [2004]
Glassjaw's Daryl Palumbo and popular producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura team up as Head Automatica, which is just really pure disco fun, which might scare the emo fans of Glassjaw. I am a fan of Daryl's other band and I like this. Some is cheesy, some is just different, and there's a cameo from Rancid / The Transplants' Tim Armstrong on the track Dance Party Plus. Decadence is one of the most underlooked records of last year. Download one of the catchier tracks from the album, Beating Heart Baby.

Big Star Records: Special Announcement

Most Adelaide music lovers know this by know but those who have been hiding under a rock and just been vague or somewhat, Big Star Records have announced that they will be open at MIDNIGHT on Sunday, 5th June (or Saturday night for the confused among you), for a couple of hours to get copies of the NEW Coldplay's X & Y, The White Stripes's Get Behind Me Satan and Oasis' Don’t Believe The Truth.

So, get down to 197 Rundle Street, City at that time and be among the first people in Australia to own any of those three releases (unless you got it leaked, of course). Pre-ordered prices apply so you can still get the cheaper price and apparently there's free coffee provided on the night, too.

Hello all. This is the sum of all the gigs i went to for the past two months. I know, i know....it took me so long. To the extent that i don't remember much about these gigs so this is going to be written with my vague memory of them. For that, i am truly sorry. This is not exactly a gig review but yeah.

Eighteen Visions at Barfly

Date: 15th (Tuesday) & 16th (Wednesday) March 2005.
Venue: Barfly, Cardiff.
Time: Doors opened at 7:30pm.
Price: 7 pounds.
Bands: Eighteen Visions + Emanuel + Misery Signals.

Barfly was packed. Both shows were sold out and so going around was a little difficult without being in contact with another body. I didn't get to see the first two bands performed (Note to self: Come early to shows. Come early to shows. Come early to shows.).

Eighteen Visions walked to the stage accompanied by the famous Phantom of The Opera music and then they proceeded to open with the first track from their latest album, 'Obsession' (both the title of the album and song). I had a friend to copy down the song list but i went back to Brunei and brought that with me and yeah, i forgot to bring it back. :( Eighteen Visions belted out mostly their latest songs but they sang a few songs from their past albums, too. They also did a cover of Guns 'N' Roses' Paradise City.

Mortiis at Barfly
Date: Tuesday, 19th April 2005.
Venue: Barfly, Cardiff.
Time: Doors opened at 7:30pm.
Price: 9 pounds.
Bands: Mortiis w/ NFD + Panic DHH.

Tuesdays are not a good time for me to go to gigs as my classes on Tuesdays ends at 8pm and it takes me about an hour to go the venue from my Uni. Again, i missed the opening bands; Panic DHH and NFD.

I don't remember much about this gig, too vague. I did take pictures but they were all so bad, i'm ashamed to put it up. Due to height problems, i could only make out Mortiis' neck upwards. One of his ears fell off during their set, that was apparently amusing. There wasn't much of a mosh pit, people were staring intently at the band while they played. Their performance was great and i liked the fact that their long hair were blown back by some unseen fan/something; it gave a vibe that they were outside on the grass. Pretty cool.

Paddy Casey at Barfly
Date: Thursday, 21st April 2005.
Venue: Barfly, Cardiff.
Time: Doors opened at 7:30pm.
Price: 8.50 pounds.
Bands/Artists: Paddy Casey + Nerina Pallot.

Admittedly, i went to this gig to accompany my friend to see Nerina Pallot. I've heard some very fantastic stuff about her songs and the words lived up, she was amazing. Her voice was so mellow, you can't help but picture yourself listening to her while curling up on your couch and reading a book. She was alone on the stage, playing either the guitar or the keyboard. I was impressed. Though people were loud and already drunk at 9pm, i was front row and could hear and see her very well. Pictures are not so good though. I took them with my cameraphone.

When her set ended and Paddy Casey went on, people were being as loud/drunk as ever. Paddy Casey was entertaining though, people pushed around to get to the front and I ended up being pushed back so I've no clear pictures of Paddy Casey. Their set, however, was too long and because of transportation problems, i left in the middle of their 3rd last song during their 'encore'.

MC Lars was the...MC. He introduced the bands and stuff like that. I was suprised to hear an American accent but when i looked up, there he was on the left end of the stage, doing his thing.

I missed Mewithoutyou because during their set, i was still q-ing to get in. The line was well past around the building. There were so many people, it was crazy. I came in around 2:45pm and saw Fightstar belting out a few songs before leaving the stage.

I got to the front just in time to see Mae. It was easy to get to the front as Mae was apparently not that known here. They were great! It was their first time touring the UK and they did a good job. I loved it. There was just something about the lead's voice. He sounds awesome.

Lucky Nine was also great. Again, not a lot of people were willing to push to the front so everything was calm at the front. Truthfully, I don't really know their music so i couldn't say much about it. Their set was good though.

When Alexisonfire came on, i think i was almost crushed. Everybody was pushing around to see them. Everyone around me was singing and screaming along to every word. It was impressive. They were impressive.

Rise Against came and they killed. I was pushed to the back from the 2nd row to the 11th row or something. It was crazy and I couldn't really hear them that well because I was trying to save myself from being trampled to death. But from all the screaming, crowd-surfing, pushing, they definitely shredded.

Coheed & Cambria. One word: AMAZING. I loved their set. Their performance was awesome but i couldn't really sing along because I didn't remember the lyrics well and they sang some songs in their one album that i haven't really heard of. By this time, i was pushed from the 11th row to the 30++th row. I gave up in trying to prove my reign over the mosh pit.

All the pictures aren't clear especially for Rise Against and Coheed & Cambria so that's why i'm not posting up any for those two. Too many moshers.

And as for Finch & Funeral For A Friend. I didn't get to see them. Let's just say... it is still a very painful experience to look back on.

Silverstein at Barfly.
Date: Tuesday, 10th May 2005.
Venue: Barfly, Cardiff.
Time: Doors opened at 7pm.
Price: 6 pounds.
Bands: Silverstein + The Black Maria + Aiden.

This is probably the most anticipated gig for the month for me. I think I've commented a lot about it in the entries here, that was how stoked i was about it. Again, my class ended at 8pm and I arrived at the gig around 9pm. I missed Aiden. The Black Maria took over the stage and they were too many people so I didn't bother to go in the mosh pit just yet. Then I missed most of The Black Maria set due to some merch/'Quinn' problem/distraction.

A few minutes before Silverstein came on, I dragged my friend to the front and we couldn't get through the first 3-5 rows so settled behind them, right next to the self-destructive kids who were hardcore dancing. I didn't get nice pictures but i got some awesome video footage (which i basically watch every now and then :D) and because the pictures suck, i'll take shots from the footage. They were awesome. I enjoyed every bit, even when some kids elbowed me; the bruises are cherished.

They opened with 'Smashed Into Pieces', i think, and played most of their set from the 'When Broken Is Easily Fixed' album and about two to three songs from their new coming album. I think they came in late for soundcheck so they didn't have a proper one because the mic kept on going offkey when the singer was talking (not when he was singing, thank god) and the instruments made funny noises now and then. Nothing too serious though and the band did apologized. It didn't really affect their playing though, they were still impressive. I don't have much to say about it, i was just so blown away that i ended up grinning to myself throughout their whole set (and during the bus ride home, too).

Those are all the gigs that i went to. :) They were all enjoyable in one way or another. Since my course is finished, i might just go to local bands' gigs to check them out or something. I've got time to kill so why not. Any particular suggestions are welcomed. Take care all.

Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs
I've decided that this is definitely in my top albums list of 2005. Even a huge possibility of #1. If you like your Sufjan Stevens / Elliott Smith / Devendra Banhart but with a bit more jazz-influence, I reckon you will love this, too.

This is their most recent record and I think one of their best releases.

65daysofstatic - I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood (5MB), from 2004's The Fall of Math. The Brits prove that they can do the whole "post-rock" / instrumental genre, too, but with catchier use of the drum machine. Via Monotreme Records.

65daysofstatic - Hole (4.2MB), from 2004's The Fall of Math. Another catchy, beautiful track from the amazing British band. Via Monotreme Records.

Do Make Say Think - Fredericia (7.1MB), from 2003's Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn. Just like their influences, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Canadians just own the instrumental rock genre. This time with some horns. Via Southern Records.

Set Fire To Flames - steal compass/drive north/disappear... (7.3MB), from 2001's Sings Reign Rebuilder. Comprises of 13 band members from Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Fly Pan Am, Hrsta, Handed Up, Exaust and Undovia (oh, to be Canadian!), this track starts off slows but ends strongly and is one of the most well-written pieces of instrumental collaboration I've heard. You might have realised that I haven't written any Gig Reviews as promised because somehow, Blogger ate my 3 posts (of 3 different gig reviews) so I say stuff it for now. So no gig reviews for those gigs, but they were all great and all sold out. So most of you were probably there, anyway. Remember, I did take photos, which you can check out.

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

The fifth album from popular rock duo, The White Stripes, is one of the most anticipated releases this year and has said to be their most "interesting" / creative work yet. More piano, less guitars, some falsetto (as witnessed in the first single, Blue Orchid), some very pop-y (like the track, My Doorbell), but still such catchy sounds from one of the best rock duos right now.

Starting this Friday, you get to hear all the tracks from both albums at various times for 1 week on Triple J, which you can listen to live online here.

Plus, on Saturday, May 28th, Triple J will also be playing the WHOLE album in full to air at 5-6pm (Australian EST) so you can get a sneak preview (if you haven't "bittorrent" or got the leaked yet) of one of this year's most anticipated records.

The album is set for release on Sunday, June 5th.

The Static Age - Ghosts (5.3MB)*, from 2005's Pushing Product 4. Listening to this on repeat. Very good punk rock without having to go "scene" nor "emo".

The Cloud Room - Hey Now Now (4.9MB)*, from 2005's self-titled The Cloud Room. Very catchy indie pop rock. Already being buzzed by other mp3 bloggers and I really like it, too.

The Sun - Must Be You (4.5MB), from 2005's Blame It On The Youth. The intro got me first and then, the raw vocals, and it just makes me dance! Go love this, too. Via Warner Bros Records.

Dead Letter Auction - In Response (3MB)*, from 2003's Cancer Of Time. I like how they keep changing their time dynamics and still sound so tight. ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead fans will love this.

The National - All The Wine (3.8MB)*, from 2005's Alligator. I think its the vocals that gets me, reminds me of Bowie, who I absolutely adore. Its a really great pop rock track you should check out.

Great Lake Swimmers - Bodies And Minds
I love this Canadian folk rock band. Bodies and Minds is such a beautiful album, reminds me of Nick Drake, maybe Sufjan Stevens and a hint of fellow Canadian Hayden. Definitely one of my favourite records of the year.

Kevin Devine - Split The Country, Split The Street
Reminds me of early Bright Eyes but with much better vocals, and even shades of onelinedrawing on this record. A little bit country, a little bit emo, a little bit pop rock, but somehow the mix works and I really love this.

Just a violin, a guitar and drums. No vocals but amazing instrumental tracks from one of the most underrated Australian bands. Melbourne's The Dirty Three got a new record (yet untitled) coming out this August/September but in the meantime, set your minds back to one of my favourite releases from them and one of the best tracks for download.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations

Hailing from Newcastle, UK, Maximo Park are one of the latest indie rock / post-punk bands catching the buzz wave and hoping for success like fellow Brits; Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand and The Futureheads. This debut record is definitely catchy and frontman, Paul Smith's accent is not to be messed with. Features the hit singles, Apply Some Pressure and The Coast Is Always Changing (both currently on high-rotation on Triple J), the band will be coming down under for a tour sometime late this year.

A new double album from the frontman of Eels, Mark Everett, or just call him E. A solo effort from him without his band (who released one of my favourite singles ever, Novocaine For The Soul), this very personal record is amazing and even features cameos like on the track, Going Fetal, which features Tom Waits.

This week has been incredibly hectic with going to 5 gigs this week, spending time with visiting mum, the usual Uni dramas and getting used to the new camera gear. Hence, no updates.

Gorillaz - Demon Days
System Of A Down - Mezmerize

The cartoon band, Gorillaz, had such a huge success with their last self-titled debut record, that a follow-up is no suprise even if its just a side-project. Created by Blur frontman, Damon Albarn and his good friend, illustrator Jamie Hewlett; the four-piece cartoon characters are back with Demon Days that has already released a catchy first single, Feel Good Inc. (features De La Soul and has recently been announced as the latest "jingle" for the new iPod TV spots in the US). In the last record, Dan "the Automator" Nakamura produced but this time round The Grey Album's DJ Danger Mouse is on board the project plus other cameos from Roots Manua, Martina Topley-Bird, Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder and even, actor Dennis Hopper doing a spoken-word narrative on the track, Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head.

System Of A Down are releasing, Mezmerize, the first half of a double album release, Mezmerize/Hyponotize, which features the hit single, B.Y.O.B. and the radio favourite, Cigaro. One of the best live rock acts (as Australians have got a taste of at their recent successful stint at the Big Day Out) and about to start a massive U.S. tour (supported by one of my favourites, The Mars Volta), don't forget to grab a copy of this long-awaited record when it comes out next Sunday.

Days Away - God And Mars (2.6MB), from 2005's Mapping An Invisible World. One of Fueled By Ramen records newest acts, this band is definitely catching the pop punk / emo buzz and the first single of their new full-length record is proof of that. Via PureVolume.

Hayden - Hollywood Ending (4.2MB), from 2004's Elk-Lake Serenade. Re-listening this beautiful album and this is the hit single, and definitely one of my favourite tracks. And another reason to move to Canada. Via InSound.

Hipwell - Sink (Acoustic) (3.8MB), from their PureVolume acoustic demos. F.T.S. reader, Leen, refered me to this beautiful acoustic emo number from fresh local four-piece act, Hipwell (who hail from Newcastle, NSW). It reminds me of early Something Corporate with a hint of The Early November, and that has got to be good. Via PureVolume.

Weezer's Make Believe reviews

I know its been posted everywhere already but notable "indie" webzine, Pitchfork gave the new Weezer album, Make Believe, just above a ZERO. But not everyone agrees.

The first mp3 blog, Fluxblog, thinks its not too bad and even offers a download of Track #2, Perfect Situation. I like it and even music recommended it. Even, Ben thinks its alright. Its definitely no Pinkerton nor The Blue Album but oh well.

The album came out on Sunday, May 8th, in Australia.

However, Pitchfork did like the latest Architecture In Helsinki album, In Case We Die, and gave it a deserving 8.8.

Their album is out now and is one of my favourites of the year. And their last Adelaide gig is definitely one of my favourite live shows of the year.

I'm having my exams in 2 weeks time so there probably would be major internet cutbacks (i would probably be going through the worst kind of withdrawal but that's not important so moving on...). Music Recommendations Week 09/05/05

Circa Survive - Juturna
This amazing debut album from five-piece outfit, Circa Survive, is already one of my favourites of this year. Definitely for fans of Mars Volta (previously music recommended) and the Rx-Bandits' side-project, The Sound of Animals Fighting (which, lead vocalist of Circa Survive, Anthony Green, is also part of, also previously music recommended); this album is amazing progressive-rock and Anthony's vocals has a reminiscence of Mars Volta's Cedric Bixler Zavala. I got demos off this record sometime last year and even then, had huge expectations for this release and they were definitely met. My favourite track is The Great Golden Baby, which is here for download and Act Appalled is such a brilliant track, too.

Architecture In Helsinki - Fingers Crossed [2003]
Melbourne's Architecture in Helsinki are one of my favourite local bands and definitely am a huge fan of their live gigs (saw them recently and reviewed here). In Case We Die was released a few weeks ago and is definitely one of my favourites of this year but their previous release is this amazing debut, Fingers Crossed. Less "dance-able" than the recent release and more chilled / laid-back but all in all, still such a brilliant album. Australian bands aren't just the bogun rock of Jet and Grinspoon, as you'll find absolute gems like this release from one of the more underrated local bands. Download my favourite track, The Owls Go, which is the "cheek-popping" crowd favourite and features one of my favourite lines, "Attic In The Basement...".

Sigur Rós - Agaetis Byrjun [1999]
I re-watched The Life Aquatic with Steven Zissou the other day and remembered that one of Sigur Rós' tracks was played during the "Jaguar Shark" scene. It was beautifully arranged with the film and made me listen to my old album of theirs again. Definitely one of those albums you SHOULD have if you like bands like Radiohead, Mew and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Download the actual track they used during the film (and its my favourite track off the album, too).

Cartel - Fleets (4.3MB), from 2005's Limited 7" Fleets / At Night. NOT the pop punk outfit, but another band with the same name whose sound reminds me of early Interpol with possibly better vocals. I wonder who gets to keep the name? Via their official website.

The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (6.9MB), from 2005's up-coming Twin Cinema. One of my favourite Canadian talents and this song is so unbelievebly catchy. Catch that riff! Via Matador Records.

Q And Not U - Wonderful People (3.6MB), from 2004's Power. One of the catchiest tracks from one of my favourite albums of last year. Via InSound.

Straylight Run - Existentialism On Prom Night (4.7MB), from 2004's self-titled Straylight Run. One of those soft piano songs that "hits home" for me from ex-members of Taking Back Sunday. Via Victory Records.

Sufjan Stevens - A Winner Needs A Wand (5.4MB), from 2000's A Sun Came. An album that could never leave my playlist and this is one of my favourite tracks. Something to hold on to whilst waiting for his anticipated new album, Illinois, out mid-year. Via InSound.

Triple J - "Like A Version" Compilation
The Decemberists - Picaresque

Triple J's morning show, Mel In The Morning, has a segment called "Like A Version", which features local Australian bands (and a few international acts) as musical guests who will re-interpret another artists' song, basically doing covers. The segment has evolved into a 23-track compilation which is out now and features such covers as The Cat Empire covering The Eagles' Hotel California, Damien Rice covering Prince's When Doves Cry and John Butler Trio covering The Police's Message In A Bottle.

Portland's The Decemberists are what makes folk rock not just for the easy-listening crowd. This album is pure folk pop/rock bliss and singer-songwriter, Colin Meloy, takes us on a journey of love lost through death, disease or some other form of tragedy. Such a beautiful album and possibly one of the major contenders as one of my favourites of this year.

To me, this is one of the most anticipated tours this year. Melbourne's Blueline Medic have always been my absolute favourite Australian band. US' Ted Leo + Pharmacists released one of my favourite records of last year and the year before. When I heard they were releasing a split EP and touring together, I couldn't wait.

Adelaide's Line Of Departure were the support for this double headlined tour. I've seen them before as one of the supports for Japan's Drum:Kan / Kentucky's Your Black Star tour (which was one of my favourite gigs of last year). They're pretty popular among the emo scene kids and I thought their set was tight. Stronger riffs than last time and good support.

Ted Leo + Pharmacists came on next and the crowd packed up right before the set. He played all the hits from Shake The Sheets including the very popular Me and Mia, The Angel's Share and the self-titled, Shake The Sheets (as the closer) plus hits from Heats Of Oak like Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone? (but not my favourite The High Party, unfortunately). He also played the Split Endz cover, Six Months In A Leaky Boat (originally recorded for Tell Balgeary, Balgury is Dead as a Ted Leo solo effort but was re-recorded as a full band for the split EP).

The whole set was just so tight. Amazing guitar riffs and the bass and drum combination was so good. Ted had a few incidents of tuning dramas (but this seems to be a usual matter as I've read in a Canadian gig post over at VanMega). 15 seconds, indeed. I asked Ted before the set if he was going to do the Kelly Clarkson cover, Since U Been Gone (which he has done and recorded for the UGO Sessions along with a breakdown of Yeah Yeah Yeahs's Maps) but he insists that part of his Idol phase is over so no luck in getting that performed that night. Amazing and brilliant tight set, though.

Blueline Medic came on and right on the very first note, a bass string BROKE! Total dramas but Ted Leo + Pharmacists' bass player, Dave, came to the rescue and lend David his bass. So, the first song (can't remember what it was because it didn't even start properly yet) was scrapped and they decided to open with one of my favourites, Swan Song Swan Dive from their first release, A Working Title In Green EP. They proceeded on to hits from The Apology Wars including the popular Making The Nouveau Riche, Cathedral and the song they hardly ever perform and is my favourite song from them, Write Us (finally got to see it perform live!).

Songs from Text Bomb were also performed like the hit single, Sleepyhead. They also did one of their new songs from the split EP, Newtown Rag (previously music recommended and the track was available for download). They are such an amazing band live, probably one of the best gigs they've done since I've seen them live almost at every Adelaide show for the past 4 years. One of the most underrated Australian bands out there and hopefully with new material coming up and a new full-length release, they'll be back to Adelaide again and gather new fans along the way because they sure did that during the gig.

The Hives aren't the only cool punk band from Sweden. In fact, I've always thought Millencolin were THE punk rock outfit of the Scandinavians. Whatever, this album is just brilliant. Download my favourite track from the album.

Fall Out Boy - From Under The Cork Tree
Everyone's favourite pop punk band right now. And rightly so, with this amazing major-label debut and follow-up to 2003's Take This To Your Grave, these kids are going to go places. Not that they haven't started that yet. Of All The Gin Joints In All The World is one of my favourite tracks and has a killer line, "your makeup stains my pillowcase, like I'll never be the same". Weezer - Make Believe
Possibly one of the best rock bands ever. Influential and has one of the most intense following of fans, this album may just give those critics a run for their money as I personally think its going back to the direction of The Blue Album and Pinkerton days. Not quite there yet but a definite step up from the disappointing Green Album and Maladroit. One of my favourite tracks is a more laid-back number but you might like and its here for download.

One of the more underrated pop punk bands, Spitalfield, released such a great album, Remember Right Now (originally released mid-2003), that I felt didn't get notice much. The track, Five Days & Counting, is one of the most "hits home for me" pop punk songs: lyrically, structurally and definitely musically / vocally. You can download the track here.

Taking Back Sunday - Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team) (3.3MB), from 2002's Tell All Your Friends. This is to me, one of the best pop punk songs ever.

Saves The Day - Ups & Downs (4.7MB), from 2004's Ups & Downs: Early Recordings And B-Sides. One of my favourite bands and this is their best b-side track, why didn't it made the A? Brilliant record from last year.

Silverstein - Smashed Into Pieces (3.5MB), from 2003's When Broken Is Easily Fixed. Screamo pop punk. The band will be in Adelaide on May 29th supported by Behind Crimson Eyes at Enigma Bar and tickets are from BigStar Records for only $28.30 (booking fee already included).

Spitalfield - I Love The Way She Said L.A. (3.1MB), from 2003's Remember Right Now. One of the more underrated pop punk bands out there. Watch out for the up-coming Music Recommendation because this IS a sneak preview.

It looks like Triple J are doing double feature albums from now on. What with the amount of great albums coming soon, no surprise at all.

The Kaiser Chiefs' full-length debut, Employment, has been causing a lot of buzz lately and the first single off the record, I Predict A Riot, is said to be this year's Take Me Out. These five lads from Leeds are taking the UK Charts by storm, getting massive airplay and hopefully an Australian tour is on the way.

Spoon's follow-up to 2002's Kill The Moonlight is one of the most anticipated albums of this year (and previously music recommended). Gimme Fiction is hand-claps fun and catchy rock that most bands wish they could exude.

Face it, us Adelaide-ians wished we could have been there but none-the-less, one of my favourite local Flickr photographers, Daniel, took brilliant photos at the festival and you should all check it out especially for those snap-happy punters out there.

Bright Eyes at Astoria

First of all, i'd like to point out that at the time, i wasn't ready for gig reviewing. I came late, i didn't know who opened for them but it was a band with a girl singing with a piano and i was too far away (i've shitty pictures as proof) so i'm sorry for all that.

The opening band was okay. Pretty colorful music. They've got the crowd going pretty well. The singer had a pretty voice. I came just in time to hear them belt out their last two songs which were both pretty okay.

Next was Bright Eyes. Seriously, it was great. The kids were not even singing along, they were just looking up at Conor Oberst singing his heart out and sipping his beer at probably every end of all the songs. It was quiet so his voice and the music was vibrant and it was fucking amazing. It was fun to watch the other band members play their instruments, there was even a guy (sitting down next to Conor) who was playing some instrument that i didn't even what it's called.

What really blew me away was when all the other band members went inside and left Conor alone with his acoustic guitar strapped over his shoulder playing the song Lua. It was absolutely beautiful, the song, the lyrics, so sad/lovely. I swear that when he was singing Lua, everybody was dead silent. The last song they performed, i think it was When The President Talks To God was done with the supporting act, it was cool to see all these people on stage playing their instruments randomly but still made it sound so good. And the lyrics bite, a reflection to Conor's political beliefs.

I had a good time (despite the fact that this guy gave me his space saying "here, i know how it feels like being short". uh, thanks. good view though so we were cool) and i still think going all the way from Cardiff to London just to watch Bright Eyes was worth it.

Something With Numbers + The Matches + MC Lars East Coast Tour

Australian's Below Par Records have just annouced quite possibly the most exciting punk rock tour this year. Unfortunately, its only on the East Coast (Should I start a petition to bring this tour to Adelaide?) BUT the line-up is enough to drag me to Melbourne (gig-ing buddies out there?) to catch some shows.

Something With Numbers released one of my favourite punk rock albums of last year, Etiquette, and one of the leaders peaking the "Central Coast scene". Their track, Against The Wind, was heavily radio played and even went to Number 1 on Triple J's Net 50. You can download an mp3: Crowner of Kings, track #5 from Etiquette (via Below Par Records).

The Matches have only been recently signed on to Below Par Records and are one of the best acts on popular indie US label, Epitaph Records. You can download some mp3 tracks from their 2004 album, E. Von Dahl Killed The Locals, at their PureVolume.

MC Lars (whose video for Signing Emo was previously featured) is the one for all your post-punk laptop rap needs. Think Weird Al Yankovich sampling Brand New and Piebald whilst rhyming about the overhype punk rock scene, iPods and forgotten poets. Geek rap has never sound so cool. Download some mp3s from his PureVolume and you see what I mean.

There have been a few notable posts on other fellow mp3 music blogs from overseas, and here are some that caught my eye (and ears):

One of my absolute favourites (and currently five track mixed), Sufjan Stevens has a new album coming out titled Illinois on July 5 in the US. Its part of his "50 States" project, and only one release before this one is out so far, Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lakes State in 2003. Pitchfork has the track-list here. Choirgirls and horn section galore!

My favourite band, The Blood Brothers, have a side project called Neon Blonde. Their new songs are like The Blood Brothers but with cooler piano riffs, a drum machine and of all things, a saxophone ending. But so, so good. Via Music (For Robots).

Finally, Explosions In The Sky's official website is back online after a terrible WWW deleting mishap. I've music recommended not once but twice. They're currently in the studio working on their next album, possibly out in 2006, which will be followed by a tour including an Australian tour. I asked the band about touring and they informed me that they ARE planning to tour sometime in 2006, possibly after the new record is released in US. They will be a releasing a "website-ordered only" E.P. for The Travels In Constants Series at their US label Temporary Residence. More information about that here. The band are on Spunk! Records in Australia and you can purchase their third album, The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, through that label.

Supermild Indie Night

I'm not a fan of "clubbing" and all this dancing business but "Indie Night" at Hindley St.'s Supermild has been getting a lot of hype lately. From 1am to about 6-ish am, you get to hear DJ Craig spin tunes of the likes of The Killers, The White Stripes, Pixies, Beatles, The Smiths, Weezer, Interpol etc. The next one will be on Saturday, May 7th, the first Saturday of May. "Indie Night" is usually on every 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. Its Free Entry and usually has line-ups so its best to go there after a big gig night out and arrive around 3-ish am.

I think its just fun to go see "scene kids" / trendsetters / hipsters / o.c. fans trying to dance and take photos of them for my Flickr.

Bad Girls Of The Bible, 1QA + Mr Wednesday at Jade Monkey

Last Saturday night at Jade Monkey was a bit of a congregation of local buzz bands. You have Bad Girls Of The Bible, still fresh from their successful 7" launch (previously reviewed here) and a recent Dan Brodie support. You have 1QA who hail from neigbouring New Zealand but are now based in Melbourne. And then, you have underrated Adelaide five-piece outfit, Mr Wednesday, who in my opinion, are one of the best Adelaide bands around (and previously band plugged).

Mr Wednesday started things off and I arrived just in time for their set. They're such an underrated band and have only released one demo/EP (previously mentioned on their band plug). Their music can only be described as beautiful and you can tell some of their influences are of the likes of Massive Attack, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Mew and Godspeed You! Black Emperor (one of my favourites). Their set was just beautiful and really suited the laid-back Jade Monkey atmosphere. I'll post a band plug update on these guys in a second but I really loved their set, anyway.

1QA were on next. The four-piece band from New Zealand, who moved to Melbourne recently and this gig was one of their first times in Adelaide. They were very different from Mr Wednesday, dance loud rock with the infectious NZ accents and sort of reminded me of The Used and a hint of one of my absolute favourites, The Blood Brothers. It was a tight set, and one of them screamed at the end. It was enough to get me to buy their album at the end ($10 for an 8-track CD at merch). Plus, one of them has a last name, Toogood (no relation to fellow ex-pat, Shihad?), the one who screamed at the end. Interesting...

Bad Girls of the Bible finally came on and their set was similar to their 7" launch. They played their track releases, 88 Keys and Simple Mistakes plus their instrumental tracks, which I really love. Highlight: Lead singer / guitarist, Dan Pash, took his shirt off and jumped into the crowd. True. There was also a song dedication to a Pash family member (who recently died). Their whole set was great as expected, maybe a slight strain to Dan's vocals but impressive as always.

Overall, it was a really great gig: nice to see some local acts performing great sets and a break from the recent overload of "major" shows.

Sydney's The Mess Hall have been described as the Australian answer to Ohio's The Black Keys. The two-piece make such loud brilliant noise for just a guitar and drums so I wasn't going to miss their show at Jive.

The Pharaohs started things off around 10pm, who I've seen a number of times before (at The Shins gig and at the Bad Girls of The Bible 7" launch; both previously reviewed). They were the only support so I think they played longer than the usual 40 minutes and they were tight as usual. They played some new songs and their riffs are catchy as always. This band has been playing such great supports lately (including a stint at the Big Day Out this year, which if I'm not mistaken, is one of their first gigs), so expect big things from them.

The Mess Hall finally played around 11pm. They played songs from their 2003 EP, Feeling Sideways, including the popular hits, Railyard Rumble and of course, Lock & Load (which one audience member could not stop yelling the track name of). They also played their new single Disco #1 (which will be in their new album, Notes From A Ceiling, coming out in June) and tracks from their 7" record, Evelyn and Shake Shake (which was released in limited copies of 500 last March 14th this year).

Highlights of the show were a number of people dancing during their set. But it was unfortunate that there was only a small crowd and most people were sitting down despite it being a sort of dance rock atmosphere. However, I really enjoyed the gig and hope the band come back again soon. This gig was the first time the band has come back to Adelaide in like over 2 years (or somewhat), so I hope it wouldn't be that long again.

Loud. Crash. Rock. Can't wait for their new album.

Summer At Shatter Creek - All The Answers
One of the most beautiful albums this year. Just the simple beauty of it makes my heart break. Has shades of Elliott Smith, maybe some Jeff Buckley and The Shins. If you like any of those bands, I'm sure you'll like this. Download the opening track, which is one of my favourites.

The Album Leaf - In A Safe Place
Was released last year but only getting some recognition now. This is such a beautiful album and The Album Leaf are just instant favourites. If you like Sigur Rós (who are featured in one of the tracks, previously five track mixed) or Radiohead, you will adore this.

Updated the five track mixes (side bar) with three tracks:

Desaparecidos - Man And Wife, The Former (Financial Planning) (1.5MB), from 2003's Read Music / Speak Spanish. Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst's underrated side-project band (which I damn straight prefer) have only had one release but its one of my favourites. Re-listening to this and here's the opening track. Via Saddle Creek Records.

Cut Copy - Saturday (5.1MB), from 2004's Bright Like Neon Glove. Hailing from Melbourne, this electronic pop act makes the local dance scene proud. About to finish off some Australian dates (already Sydney and they're doing a gig in Melbourne tonight: 8pm at Hi-Fi Bar, catch them if you can) and heading off to the UK for a string of dates including one with my favourite, Mylo. Perfect for any pre-Saturday night party. Via InSound.

Sufjan Stevens - Jason (7.2MB), from 1999's A Sun Came. One of my favourite songs from Sufjan. I just can't help it, this album has conquered my ears for weeks. And this song is dedicated to one of my best mates, Jase. Have a safe trip! Via Asthmatic Kitty Records.

Architecture in Helsinki at Jive

When I heard that Architecture In Helsinki were going to be in town for a gig at Jive, I was estatic. Anyone who has ever been to one of their shows know its one big groove dance party no one could resist. So, of course I wasn't going to miss this.

The support band for the gig was local Adelaide band, Hit The Jackpot. Formerly a two-piece but with a new member, now a trio. The band swapped instruments with one another a lot and their sound is probably best described as indie-shouty. Or something. They played a short set, though, probably for about 35 minutes max.

Before Architecture in Helsinki actually came on, the Manager of Jive (a sweet Canadian guy) went onstage and told everyone to stand up and pack the front because people were initially sitting down [my Flickr link] for the gig (as they did for the support). That was good because the biggest crime people could make at gigs is sitting down whilst a band who make music to dance to are about to go on.

Architecture In Helsinki finally came on and all 8 members had some form of leaves hanging off them (as belts, as ties, a necklaces, as "bandanas") just to keep the theme of their album cover. For the curious among you (from left to right in the first AIH photo): Cameron Bird (lead vocals), Kellie Sutherland (lead female vocals), Isobel Knowles, Jamie Mildren, Gus Franklin, Tara Shackell, James Cecil and Sam Perry. Yes, they're all permanent members who play various instruments and swap instruments with one another in every song.

They performed tracks from their new album, In Case We Die, as the gig was technically their CD launch for the sophomore release. Some of the tracks played from that album were the new hit single, It'5, opener Neverevereverdid, the title track about death, In Case We Die and the massive hit single, Do The Whirlwind. They also performed tracks from their first album, Fingers Crossed, including the infectiously catchy Attic In The Basement and the cheek-popping crowd favourite, The Owls Go.

They even did an awesome Roxy Music cover that got the crowd grooving and by the end of it, it was definitely slowly turning into a dance venue. They had an encore set performing somewhat of a megamix of their songs including a different version of Do The Whirlwind that was just brilliant. Also, at the end of the gig, James Cecil tells the crowd "as last words": "When you get old and look back, don't say you've never danced!" Truer words could not have been spoken.

I must say, I loved the fact they play random percussions in their songs like they just do this randomly even though it sounds exactly like their record. Just the way they pick up the percussion instruments on the floor and throw things and play such instruments like "cheek-popping", "woodblock clapping" and "tin fall to the ground". Such an interesting and brilliant band with unbelievebly catchy songs with clever lyrics. Just so good.

Fun. Interesting. Dance-o-rama. Melbourne's best kept secret is Architecture In Helsinki.

Triple J: Feature Album of The Week

Hot Hot Heat - Elevator

Previously music recommended and was one of the first five track mixes back in late January, Hot Hot Heat's Elevator is finally featured on Triple J. Catchy keys, Steve Bays' unique vocals and just making the hipsters dance again; this album is full of punk rock fun and a great follow-up to their successful debut, Make Up The Breakdown. You get to hear all the tracks from the album at various times all this week on Triple J, which you can listen to live online here.

End of Fashion, Faker + Daughterboy Jao at Enigma Bar

Saturday night at Enigma Bar had probably one of the best Australian lineups in awhile. Perth's End Of Fashion, Sydney's Faker and Melbourne's Daughterboy Jao. All bands are currently on high radio rotation and have their own crowd following.

Daughterboy Jao started an hour late due to problems with getting to Adelaide from Melbourne and apparently got lost and completely missed their sound check. Hence, the constant buzzing coming from lead singer/ guitarist Oliver Jao Smith's guitar lead and no way to avoid that. They still played an OK but short set, which includes their popular hit, Better For You & Me and their new single, Thrills. The bass was good and the drumming was alright. Just unfortunate that they started off the night in a short set with not much enthusiasm.

Faker played next and the crowd grew. They played about 11 songs including their hits, Enough, the popular Quarter to Three and Familiar. They're a great five-piece band who will catch more attention when their debut EP The Familiar / Enough out May 8th and debut album, Addicted Romantic, out June 6th, are released. The catchy dance rock (post mod?) coming from them were awesome and definitely had the crowd going. Their Brit-sounding vocals were good and I thought they played pretty tight. Can't wait to hear their EP and album when they come out.

End Of Fashion finally came on stage. They still have their new drummer (from the last time I saw them at the Home & Hosed Tour with Gelbison) and now, have a new bass player. So far, I've seen the band with 3 different lineups (and counting?). They've been away in Mississippi, USA recording their anticipated debut album, which will hopefully be released sometime this year.

They played tracks of their two EPs, like Rough Diamonds and Too Careful, plus popular crowd favourites like Lock Up Your Daughters. They also played new tracks that will be off their forthcoming debut and also some b-sides that the crowd were familiar with. Justin's vocals were brilliant as always, Rod's guitar was tight and the new bass and drum combinations was actually quite good. No encore, though, since it was already a late night (due to Daughterboy Jao's late start). I cannot wait for their full-length to be released.

AusProud. Dance. Rock. The Australian music scene is definitely not dead.

Gatsby's American Dream - The Volcano
This band is clever punk rock. Sure, punk rock seems to get noticed for catchy riffs but this band is way ahead of that. Brilliant, interesting album. The first track is already five track mixed so I give you another great track for download.

Blueline Medic - Split EP w/ Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
Australian Tour exclusive. Blueline Medic are my favourite Australian band and so heavily underrated.
